What is this study about?
This study aims to develop and test social media interventions to help young people reduce risky behaviors, such as alcohol use. The study will help us learn how to deliver information in a way that is appealing and helpful to 16-24 year old Facebook users.
What does my participation in this study involve?
You are invited to take a short 5 minute online survey to see if you qualify for a research study. If you are eligible you will be asked to complete another survey for which you will earn a $30 gift card. You will then be added to a Facebook group to participate in the group for 8 weeks. Afterwards, you will take several follow-up surveys at varying time points (3 months, 6 months, and 12 months) for which you will also receive gift cards. If you are a minor, we encourage you to let your parent(s) or adult guardian(s) know you are participating in this study.
How will you protect my privacy?
The information we collect will be considered confidential and will only be shared by the research team including the principal investigator and research staff.

Will I directly benefit from participating in this study?
While you may not receive a direct benefit from participating in this research, some people find answering certain questions to be a valuable experience. We hope that this study will help us understand how social media can be used to inform young adults about important health information.
What is the potential risk of participating in this study?
Sometimes answering questions about health behaviors can be uncomfortable. At any point during the surveys you may skip any questions you do not wish to answer and you are free to stop your participation in the research study at any time.
Will I be compensated for my time?
After completing a short survey we will let you know if you are eligible to participate in the full study.
If you are eligible, you could be paid up to $221. Eligible participants are paid $30 for completing the first (baseline) survey, $35 for the 3-month (follow-up) survey, $45 for the 6-month survey, and $55 for the 12-month survey. Plus, one group from each enrollment can earn an additional $56 for their participation. Payment will be given in the form of an Amazon e-gift card upon completion of each survey. This e-gift card may be used directly for online purchases. You must finish each survey to receive your compensation, but you can still skip any question you do not want to answer. If at any time you choose not to finish an assessment, you will not receive this compensation.
What will the researchers do with the data?
We plan to publish the results of this study, but will not include any information that could identify you or any individual in these publications.
